5 Ways to Really find stress relief in coloring

I feel more satisfaction and pride in doing a 3000 piece puzzle than a single coloring page whose mere existence meets the magnet and fridge scenario to end up in the trash. The puzzle at least has the potential of repeated success stories; hope tucked away in the closet.

But don't give up yet. The coloring page SHOULD have a destiny of disintegration. It is in the lack of commitment that this colored, hopefully, recycled piece of paper allows us to let go and not worry about the busyness of our hands. Even the simplest pencil sharpener does not run the risk of finger loss.

It's too stressful. Those intricate designs and patterns are a challenge for the most patient adult let alone anyone who is in need for a stress free activity. If you've ever started something that looks amazing only to spend 3 hours and accidentally change colors in your pattern, you know the struggle.

1. Use markers.
Not the super fine point sharpies. Steal your kids markers, if the caps are still on, or find some sharpies that are average size. They just fill spaces quicker and there's no need to sharpen.

2. Throw it away.
That's right. What better way to learn stress free non-attachment than to throw away that coloring page you spent 2 hours de-stressing on. It's all about intention! Start your big bold coloring page with the intention of this not-so masterpiece to be among the leftovers and grinds of yesterday.

3. Make your own designs.
Today it's called Zentangle, a decade ago it was called doodling. Start with a shape and fill it in with lines, dots, squiggles or anything that fills the space. Start from a center with no where to go, maybe set a time limit, but mostly don't worry about it.

4. Color with music.
Coloring with TV just doesn't work as well, it's difficult to watch both and then you're multitasking and not de-stressing – the very act coloring claims as benefits. Music however, uplifts and allows the mind to focus and the fingers to linger.

5. Find a simple coloring Book.

Here are a few simple, fun, and silly options...
